Eligibility / What you must have
To be eligible, you must satisfy both the academic qualifications and sports achievements. Also, age rules apply.
Academic / Technical Qualifications
- You must have a Graduation degree (in any subject) from a recognised university.
- In addition, you need a technical qualification in sports coaching. For example:
- Diploma in Sports Coaching from a recognised institute such as NSNIS (Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports) under SAI.
- Or a Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Coaching (PGDSC) from a central sports university or equivalent recognised institution.
- Or equivalent qualification from a UGC-recognised sports university.
Sports / Achievement Criteria
You must also show proof that you have participated in sports competitions at a high level. Some common criteria:
- Represented your country in an international competition.
- Or represented your state in national or inter-university or recognised championship events at least twice.
- Or participated in inter-service competitions, police games, railway championships, etc at least three times.
Ensure that you have certificates, score sheets, or other relevant documents ready as proof.
Age Limit
Age is checked as of 1 August 2025 (or another date specified in the notification).
- Minimum age: 21 years
- Maximum age (for unreserved/general male): 37 years
- Relaxation for reserved categories (SC / ST, OBC, women) and for disabled persons as per government norms.
Selection Process: How are candidates chosen?
The selection will happen in stages. You must clear each stage to move ahead.
- Written Examination
- The written test is usually 150 marks.
- Questions may test knowledge of sports theory, coaching methods, rules, physical education, general knowledge, etc.
- Interview / Viva / Practical
- After the written exam, a viva-voce or interview or practical test (demonstration) may be held.
- This may be worth 50 marks, making the total 200 marks.
- Document Verification
- If you clear the exam + interview, you will be asked to show all your certificates, identity proofs etc.
- Verification ensures your eligibility is genuine.
- Medical / Physical test (if required)
- You may have to undergo a medical test to check if you are fit for a coaching job.
Finally, a merit list is prepared. Based on your marks and category reservation rules, you may be selected.
